Emotional Eating – How To Fight it
Overeating is always a problem in our society. Some people have a problem with drugs others with alcohol, but the rest of the world has problems with eating food. We do eat food in order to survive and when it goes over the top and becomes something that we do when we feel stressed out or sad, is another thing. This is called emotional eating and it has been a problem ever since. Emotional eating is not only a really bad habit; it is utterly dangerous to your health as well. People that are trapped inside emotional eating are people that cannot continue with their life since they love what they are doing. It would be hard for them to let go of what they know that makes them feel good.
Studies have been made towards knowing why people act the way they do towards food when they feel down or even at times happy. When a person consumes a fatty or something that is filled with sugar, they enjoy it. That enjoyment stimulates endorphins, these are chemicals in the brain that signals that pleasurable experience. The chemical also stimulates us to eat more of that food, which makes us calm down and feel good at the same time. Not to mention, our brain that loves to spoil us that many would also release dopamine, which makes us want more of that food we just love eating.
Also, when we have the chance to pass by over a street filled with our favorite restaurants, we automatically feel that urge to eat. Not because we are hungry, but because we remember the taste of the food that we once tasted in that area. It becomes a habit and it triggers at times that we do not expect it the most. But when does casual eating become something that most people today are afraid of? It’s when we just eat food just for the sake of eating; it becomes a bad habit, an addiction that we rarely have the power to control.
Avoiding Bad Habits
When you really want to get rid of a bad habit, you want to know where to start changing it yourself. A bad habit can only be stopped when you know where to start. In this case, in order to stop emotional eating, you need to avoid the bad habits that may lead to it eventually.
Eating when feeling down – This is a very common thing that gets people all the time. Eating too much when they feel sad is the root of all evil. You start by eating ice cream because your boyfriend just broke up with you or you just lost a very important business deal, everything sums up and would bring you straight to the fridge. The icing on top of this is that you would even eat until you pass out; in some cases this has happened.
Due to chemicals that are secreted from our brains, it would be nearly impossible to start the craving for food when we feel sad. We would need something that can take our mind of the problem and focus it into food that we want to eat. Whether it is comfort food or sweet and salty, they are all the same. The best way to overcome this craving when we are sad is to take a nap. Stop everything that you are doing. When you are sad, you are sad, period. Your brain cannot function properly for you are looking for something that can make you feel good again, which is naturally food.
Stay away from that craving and get a nap! A lot of people do this and they are unconsciously blocking the brain from secreting chemicals that would let us crave some food. Instead, we sleep and skip that urge to eat and feel good once we wake up.
